Tony Bellew v Nathan Cleverly A battle of mammoth proportions

A battle of mammoth proportions is about to take place in Liverpool this evening. This titanic clash is set to explode at the Echo Arena between Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly in a hotly anticipated grudge match which is set to be a blockbuster in British boxing history.

The build up to this fight has been intense and immense since it is no secret that the battle will be fuelled by sheer hatred. A highly charged press conference and weigh in resulted in some choice words where the cruiserweights locked horns and spat out some seriously cutting jibes. The pair first fought in October 2011 where Cleverly won victoriously over his rival Bellew and retained his WBO World Light Heavyweight title. Nathan Cleverly is determined to beat Bellew again in front of his home crowd and succeed in achieving the status of becoming a two -weight World Champion. Fans can definitely expect fireworks as the genuine rivalry has reached boiling point making way for a quality clash of the Titans.

It is assumed that Tony Bellew’s anger and intense hatred towards Cleverly means that he will not be focused and be out of control but according to Coldwell, this will not be the case, he believes that Tony will produce a calculated and strategic fight and put on a heroic display, keeping his emotions at bay. The collision between these two feuding cruiserweights will be shown on Sky Sports from 6.10pm and entrance into the Arena will start at 5pm, with the first fight kicking off at 5.15pm. Boxing fans will be overwhelmed by the run of events leading up to the main contest, with the likes of Scott Quigg v Hidnori Othake, Anthony Joshua v Michael Sprott and George Groves v Dennis Douglin, to name but a few.

Who will be victorious? We are yet to find out, but there is one certainty and that is a wonderful night of quality boxing at Liverpool’s Echo Arena is definitely on the cards.

Everyman Theatre Liverpool RIBA Stirling Prize

The newly rebuilt Everyman Theatre in Liverpool has just been awarded the most prestigious award in architecture, The RIBA Stirling Prize. The original theatre was converted from a 19th century chapel and became part of the cultural fabric of Liverpool, launching the careers of numerous actors and actresses including The Exclusive Company of Bill Nigh and Julie Walters. The Judges of the RIBA Stirling prize described The Everyman Theatre as a “21st century theatre that celebrates the past” and it was “truly for every man, woman and child.” The Everyman Theatre has fought off some stiff competition to win the prize including, the Shard, the Library of Birmingham, and the London Aquatics Centre.

Rebuilding this much loved theatre was always going to be a challenge, the architects, Haworth Tompkins, had to build a new cutting edge theatre while maintaining the essence of one of Liverpool’s most cherished institutions. The architect chosen to take on this task was Haworth Tompkins and Tompkins understood the theatre and the organisations ambitions. The rebuilding of The Everyman was a long and carefully orchestrated project; it took Tompkins and The Everyman organisation ten years of collaboration to carefully design and create a new Everyman Theatre that retained the original theatres qualities and values. Gemma Bodinetz, the artistic director said that the £28m, 440 seat theatre embodied the “renegade and generous spirit of the city.”

Some of the points highlighted by the judges were the theatre’s “clever use of materials with interlocking spaces and brilliant lighting” and its “quirky sense of humour.” This sense of humour is conveyed through The Everyman’s façade, which is made up of 105 etched metal brises soleil featuring photographs of the figures famous Liverpudlians.

Howarth Tompkins architects have managed to transgress time and space with the theatre, perfectly conjoining the original theatre with the pioneering architecture of the new Everyman. He has achieved this through using reclaimed masonry from the original theatre to build walls in many of the spaces, resulting in an effortless juxtaposition of the old and new. The president of RIBA Stephen Hodder said that “It is a ground-breaking example of how to build a daring bold and highly sustainable large public building in a historic city centre.”

The Everyman Theatre is a triumph of modern architecture and a perfect example of how to bring the warmth and feeling which is so often lacking in 21st century architecture. The Everyman has retaken its place as the beating heart of Liverpool’s cultural fabric and will bring a new generation to the cities most loved theatre.

Congratulations to all who were involved in winning this highly acclaimed award and to the people of Liverpool who I am sure inspired the architects Haworth Tompkins to win this esteemed prize.
